When a Z32 five-speed goes into reverse and the white lamps stay dark, the switch on the transmission case is usually open. That plunger closes the reverse-light circuit only while the gearbox is in reverse. Heat, oil, and age stick the contacts or leak fluid past the threads, so the lamps never come on—or they stay on in every gear.
